A case study of the effects of ship emissions on the microphysical, radiative, and chemical properties of polluted marine boundary layer clouds is presented. Two ship tracks are discussed in detail. In situ measurements of cloud drop size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside-cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to remotely sensed measurements of cloud radiative properties. The authors examine the processes behind ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer as an example of the effects of anthropogenic particulate pollution on the albedo of marine stratiform clouds. |

The coastal waters in Nigeria are described in relation to the general morphology, vegetation and beach Type along the 850km coastal. The environmental sensitivity of the fragile Niger delta ecosystem is expressed by the numerous estuaries, rivers, creeks, lacustrine and inshore waters which support freshwater and brackish water mangrove swamps. Ocean resources exploited from the Niger delta and adjacent Continental platform include oil, gas and fishes. The general hydrograph and superfial circulation are described against the background of human activities in coastal settlements and developmental pressures for resource utilisation giving rise to water pollution. Micropollutants identified and measured so far include organic waste, trace heavy metals... |

This study examines the distribution, abundance and characteristics of surface micro- and mesoplastic debris in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 41 samples were collected in 2011 (summer) and 2012 (summer). Results, firstly, revealed that micro- (<5mm) and mesoplastic debris were widely and uniformly distributed in this area with average concentrations of 130,000 parts/km(2) and 5700 parts/km(2), respectively. Importantly, a strong correlation between micro- and mesoplastic concentrations was identified. Secondly, a classification based on the shape and appearance of microplastics indicated the predominant presence of fragments (73 %) followed by thin films (14 %). Thirdly, the average mass ratio of microplastic to dry organic matter has been measured at... |

A total of 208 polycyclic aromatic compounds and their substituted homologues were investigated on eight stations along Croatia-Italy transect in the Middle Adriatic. PAC concentrations were higher in the coastal area than in the open sea area. The highest PAC concentrations were measured in the vicinity of the industrial harbor of Split while the lowest concentrations were observed on stations located in the open sea area. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were dominant group of compounds on each investigated station with contributions in total PAC concentration of more than 85%. S-PAH concentrations were higher than O-PAH concentration in each sample and tend to decrease as the distance from the coast increased. Contributions of O-PAH in total PAC... |

The taxonomic composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of copepods were analysed from monthly zooplankton samples collected in Makupa creek and Mombasa Harbour (Makupa creek was until recently subjected to considerable dumping of domestic and industrial waste). At least 51 copepod species belonging to 38 genera in the families Calanoida (25), Harpacticoida (5), Poecilostomatoida (7) and Cyclopoida (1) were identified. The most common genera were Acartia, Acrocalanus, Corycaeus, Oncaea and Oithona. Copepods bloomed in the wet months of November and April (75 to 158/m3). Abundance was consistently high near the creek mouth and low within the creek enclosure. Copepod diversity (H’) was slightly higher (2.00 to 2.57) during September, November,... |

It is understood that the rate of bioaccumulation and subsequent depuration of heavy metals in marine animals is influenced by the chemical state, as well as the kinetics of transformation between different species of chemical salts dissolved in water. The Indian Brown mussel, Perna indica, was exposed to copper nitrate and chloride, individually, to analyse the rate of accumulation, depuration, oxygen uptake and filtration rates. When supplied in very low quantities, environmentally realistic concentrations, the rate of accumulation of copper nitrate and chlorides showed variations. When the animals were transferred to sea water, these two salts did not show any clear cut differences in the depuration rate. Irrespective of the previous accumulation... |

The evaluation of the possible environmental changes due to the anthropic impacts that have happened in the last years in this scenario and the redefinition of areas that suffer affectations were carried up. Any environmental alteration of this ecosystem, either of natural or human origin, can have an important economic and social repercussion. According to the proposed chemical and biological indexes, the waters of the Gulf of Batabanó presented mesotrophic conditions with tendency to the eutrofization in four fundamental areas. In the silts of the Gulf the values of organic carbon and sulphidric acid were characteristic of sediments with high concentrations of organic matter. In the coastal sector N, was determinate high concentrations of sulphidric acid... |
